I tried to train Harley to sleep in the crate overnight but gave up after a few weeks due to extreme tiredness and her having a chest infection. I brought her into our room on her bed next to ours and she slept through from that night onwards. She soon found herself on our bed and now sleeps with us, occasionally taking herself off to the spare bedroom or the landing if she's too hot. It's a personal choice if you have your dog on the bed. Personally I love my cuddles from her, especially in the morning.
Pippa may discuss the box beside the bed but only after she has discussed the 'cold turkey' method (her words, not mine) or at least that's the case in my version of the handbook.
