Evening everyone I have a six and a half month old puppy who up until now has been gaining weight steadily. However for the past two weeks he has stuck at 17.7kg, should I be concerned about this or is it normal now he's a little bit older? His appetite is fine and he is well in himself. I am feeding him what is recommended on the bag which up until this point has worked well, should I increase it? Thank you
How does he look? Can you feel his ribs without applying any pressure? Does he have a very well-defined tuck-up when looked at from the side and a waist when looked at from above? Do you see the outline of his ribs when he eats and sniffs? Or all the time?
Hi @Coa it is perfectly normal for puppy weight gain to slow down or even appear to stop for short periods of time. If he's eating, drinking, playing, exercising, sleeping and toileting as normal I wouldn't be too worried. Check in another few weeks - I only weigh on a monthly basis anyway - and see if there has been a small gain and gave a chat with the vet if you are worried.
Can you point me towards the body condition chart that states this for an 'ideal' body score. Thank you
Oh, don't be daft. I in no way suggested this was an ideal body type. I was asking questions about his condition to find out if he was overly skinny, overly chubby or just right.
Apologies for using the word 'ideal' but your wording all focuses on a pretty standard description for a preferred body condition (tuck up, waist), so just wondering where the additional references to the outline of ribs etc comes from as I've seen you mention it previously in posts discussing weight/body condition.
