Hi, at last my training to stop door mugging is paying off  I have a bag of treats ready on the hall table, door bell rings, treats in hand, open door dogs sit get treats. Today Thomas' friend was dropped off they sat beautifully but Charlie couldn't resist 1 very little jump but sat and got another treat. Thomas' friend has two dogs and he commented how well behaved they are, now I know he's only 14 years old but I'm taking that compliment and running with it ;D

Mat training is going great too, Charlie is getting it more than Hattie, I say 'mat' and after a little coaxing they sit happily on the mat whilst we cook and eat, clear up and then they can join us. Infact when I go into the kitchen Charlie quite often automatically sits on the mat :)

Not a clicker in sight, just a bag of treats and all focus on me FOR A CHANGE ::)

Impressive! Well done!! Stay on mat when doorbell rings is hugely difficult for us!

Oh good grief I hadn't even thought of that, I will save for that for when they stay on the mat the first time I ask ::)

I should have added stay anywhere (regardless of mat) when doorbell rings...we've just done the mat, so it's easier than no mat - if you see what I mean! ::)

I think this will be very difficult for Hattie & Charlie as they both go bonkers when the door bell rings

So when I come to do this should I have them sit behind the closed hall door, enter guest, open hall door - 'SIT' treat hold for a very short time and release making sure all paws are on the floor? How do you deal with this Julie? :)

The problem with 2 dogs is they start each other off even if they hear a car in the drive ::)

We haven't cracked it at all yet. I have a hall door too but hadn't thought of using it in the way you suggest - that might work very well, I might try it.

What we are doing right now is fake scenarios - Charlie on mat, doorbell rings, Charlie rushes to door and...nothing. Back on mat, reward. When Charlie stays on mat, door opens a crack - closed again if he moves. It's the same thing as lifting the food bowl back up if he breaks his sit...There is a video online, I think it's kikopup.

My friend that is the doorbell ringer is a very good friend...but I can't ask her too often. Dad and OH get to do it too, when I can bribe them!

Must be more than twice as difficult with two though, can see they would feed off each other's excitement.

Ah ha, children at home so lots of fake door bell ringing ;D Mine don't get their food if they move from a sit/wait so yes the same thing. Thinking back that's how I cracked the door dashing that Charlie did on his arrival here, he was a nightmare, now he doesn't do that. I really want to get this trained as it is very annoying and noisy when ever anyone arrives at our house.

A real improvement today with door mugging. My friend came to pick Thomas' friend up, door bell rang and only 1 bark from Hattie, opened door they said hello came back in and sat infront of me for treats and remained there whilst we chatted - no jumping up at all. Should I have let them say hello first though? :-\

Very tempted by the mat in the kitchen thing.
Lilly is a right moocher in the kitchen - encouraged by OH of course!
Plan for my week off (in between studying of course) ;D

We have the mat just at the kitchen door so that the terrible two can still see us ::)
