My boyfriend’s mom’s chocolate lab has very bad dandruff. I’m sure all our dogs have some but maybe his is more prominent cause he is a chocolate. Is there anything she ca do to help with the dandruff? He is 5 months old. I don’t think she has ever bathed him but she brushes him. I know we used to give our westies fish oil, but I don’t know if it’s different for labs. Any tips would be greatly appreciated :)

My chocolate lab doesn't have dandruff. But I've noticed that when they are stressed ill or out if condition they do develop it. I improve their diet and reduce their stress and it usually improves. I don't bath them as that would just dry out their skin and reduce the natural oils. I think some other lab owners use salmon oil to help with dry skin and dandruff.

Yup, my choccy definitely has no dandruff. My black bitch is prone to it and, as @SwampDonkey says, it's far worse when she's stressed. I do give them all salmon oil once a day which certainly helped. It might also be worth looking at his diet to see if there's anything in there he could be sensitive to, as this often manifests as skin problems. Similarly environmental allergies; could he be reacting to a washing detergent? I also very rarely brush them; brushing made Willow's dry skin worse. They get brushed a handful of times a year now.

My older black lab gets dandruff. Completely disappeared on salmon oil. When I ran out and didn't get round to having any at home for a good couple of weeks it came back. I don't really brush our dogs, only Benson when he is moulting. He has really a thick double coat, so when he moults it comes out in great handfuls, plus he looks really scruffy compared to my 2 blacks who I barely notice when in moult.

We use salmon oil on our three dogs’ food, and their coats are all gorgeous and shiny. We get a high grade one in a pump that makes it really easy to dispense on their food (Amazon).

I'm another salmon oil user with no dandruff:). I gave a chocolate who is a monster when it comes to shedding with clumps coming out at a time , but I rarely brush. I think the last time corresponded with the end of her moult in the autumn :). Diet can also affect dandruff so could be worth looking at the current food.

Axel used to have bad dandruff as a puppy, around the 5 month mark I think, when he started to really lose his puppy coat. Ever since he lost that puppy coat though it has never come back. I can’t give him any fish oil either because he’s allergic, so I’m glad it resolved o_O

Daisy has puppy dandruff - I noticed it a couple of days ago and was horrified at first, I thought it might be something lacking in her diet, but the vet assured me her coat was healthy and it’s quite normal for some puppies to have this during their puppy moult and change to their adult coat, she is 4 months, but even so I am going to add some salmon oil to her food. Her new coat is nice and glossy and really thick and wavy along her back to base of tail, also she has gone from a light choc to a dark choc :). I have also stopped brushing her fur through as it seems to make it greasy.
