We have noticed that puzzle has extremely smelly breath, barely has got bad breath but not too bad, and puzzle's is much much worse. They are both on fish flavored food, but her breath does not smell of fish, it just stinks, it is almost unbearable when she sticks her face in yours. Has anyone got any recommendations for treats/supplements/chews that will help freshen her breath? We have started in the process of brushing her teeth, barley hates having his teeth brushed, but instead he gets a chew everyday
Re: Bad breath Sorry Annabelle ,can't help on chew advice.....Dexter is kibble fed and teeth cleaned everyday and his breath is peachy so that is our solution that works for is.From previous discussions on this, folks seem to think that the dental sticks are a waste of time because they get gobbled up so quickly....I've never bought them myself so can't give an opinion. Bet is can be a bit of a challenge to do Barleys teeth....but I'm sure the raw part of his diet helps with that...you might find a difference with puzzle when you change her to raw x
Re: Bad breath Meaty, soft bones (like raw chicken drumsticks or thighs with the bone in) and/or teeth brushing are the way to go If the teeth brushing is a challenge just focus on the front teeth and include raw meaty bones in the diet, which tend to take care of the back teeth that are hard to reach easily with a toothbrush. If her breath smells then it's definitely a sign that it's time to step up the dental care, which is exactly what you are doing by the sound of it
Re: Bad breath Before we had Finley, our older dog developed really bad breath and we CURED this using a seaweed supplement we got from our food supplier – Trophy. When she died we had some left over and decided to use it on Finley and Ruby until it runs out. It is £12:00 or so to buy, but you need so very little of it, it lasts an age. Breath doggy but certainly not bad and teeth still gleaming. ;D ;D More to add to your Dad’s bill :

Barley's canines have a bit of plaque on them, but his back ones are nice and clean from all of the bones he has had.
Re: Bad breath If a dog is free from periodontal disease, then bad breath may be an indicator of ill health. So if a few days diligent tooth brushing does improve things, it might be worth a chat with your vet.

Re: Bad breath Have you checked any folds in her lower lip? Some dogs have them and some don't. I had a lab x springer who would get an infection from food crud caught in these lip folds, it was easily solved by just wiping around these folds with a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide after every meal.
Re: Bad breath
I wonder if she's got some food wedged in the gum cavity left by the tooth...
it was fully stitched up, and it only took a few days until her adult canine started to poke through. The nurse said that it was healing very nicely when she went for her check up on friday, but you do have a valid point
