Poor girl. I hope it’s just the painkillers. Sending her big hugs x

Yes I hope it's just the painkiller effect. She looked up this morning but didn't bark when the postman called - not a good sign, but I did just manage to get her out to walk about 200 yds to the field where she did a wee - phew! I had to sort of pat her along under her tummy to get forward movement but we got there in the end. She trotted off and did a wee than scooted back to the kissing gate into the field so mobility seems to be ok again. Must be the painkiller I think. We have to keep her to short lead walks for the next 3 days and go back if there is any pain recurring. We're away for a couple of nights from Friday so she will get some extra enforced rest in the kennels which will be no bad thing. It's a work trip that we are normally both involved in but R will stay at home and babysit if Lady isn't fit enough for the kennels.

Longer term I hope she isn't starting down a slippery slope. She has ED of course, but that seems to be doing well after her elbow ops when she was around 3 years old. She has what looks like an arthritic lump on her left rear hock. The pain could have been that or a back problem. Fingers crossed.

The screaming... I had that TWICE with Merlin, both times he had hurt a toe. The sound is terrible; you automatically think something really frightful has occurred. My vet thought it was a shock reaction in addition to the actual pain. Fingers crossed Lady continues to improve, and it was only due to pinching a nerve or similar. Urgh, they do worry us indeed...

It reminds me of Euan. He had an herniated disk after climbing a staircase which he didn’t normally do. My oh was with him and asked if I heard him scream and I did. We were on a short holiday in Germany. The hotel had an elevator, only to the floor beneath us. We had to climb one stairway. It was a rather curvy one. After that he kept on screaming. When we got home we went to the vet and was sent to a neurosurgeon in a pet hospital. An mri was performed and after one week he went to the operating table. I don’t want to frighten you, but Euan had never been the same. Always in pain and on heavy pain medication. He died when he was 10, one and a half year after his major surgery. Twisted his back again when stepping out of the door. He screamed a whole weekend. I can still hear his screaming....despite the very heavy pain medication (tramadol and metacam)!

I would be inclined to feed her if the pain meds are giving her diarrhea - I would think they might be irritating her gut lining, and food might line the gut and protect it from the pain meds.

Snowie went about 18 hours not moving let alone weeing after being treated for back pain. When he did eventually wee, it went on FOREVER!!! The longest wee in history. We were all incredibly happy!

I remember you said this when Snowie hurt his back. His back legs still tremble when he lifts his leg to wee, but otherwise you’d never know he had been in so much pain. Of course I never stop worrying! But he is now the healthiest he’s ever been - at 6 yo. Fit and leaping onto the bed, and doing the zoomies every now and then. Hopefully Lady will also recover well.

    Back to normal!!!!!

Just got back from our morning walk and the SBD seems back to normal thank goodness. Vet suggested 3 days of short lead walks but to be honest she was up and ready this morning and took off like a rocket. Phew! :pull:

Glad to hear things are on the up! What a relief.

We were told to force our boy to rest, that the pain meds would make him feel he could do more and that he could do damage unless fully healed.

She hasn't had any pain relief for 24 hours and the last dose was just a 50% top up so I think we are reasonably safe. Movement was free and easy while she was on-lead so I decided to let her off. She's mooching about in the garden at the moment looking for foxes under the garden shed so clearly spring is in the air as well!

I think what makes it worse is you can't ask them what's wrong or anything so it's all guess work.

I'm not sure if dogs feel gratitude or even realise that you are trying to look after them, but Lady has been following me around all day and keeps licking my hands! So what's all that about?
