Wondered if anyone has any idea why an arthritic 10 year old lab suddenly has breath that smells of rotten cabbage? Teeth seem ok, he's on painkillers every day, has been for about 9 months, but in the last couple of weeks his breath is really bad, would rather have the silent and deadlys from the other end!

Teeth that's what I'd check first stuff can be going on even if you can't see it there's also some conditions can which can make breath Smell.. either way I would check with a vet as it's a sudden change and at his age things can start to deteriorate. With seniors it's best.

I suspect there is an infection somewhere, really would get this checked by a vet though. Rotten cabbage smell =sulphur compounds = anaerobes

He might have a bone lodged in his teeth or even in his cheek (I know a dog whose cheek went rotten from a stuck bone). Is he worrying his mouth constantly, like rubbing it or licking it? You should feel around inside for any stuck foreign objects - but make sure he can’t clamp his mouth shut on your fingers, put a stick or rubber bone in his mouth to keep his teeth apart.

Is he licking his anus? Blocked anal glands that are licked can make a mouth stink!!

But really, a vet visit should be your first call. It could gut problems caused by the pain meds, or anything really. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, really can't find, see or feel anything in his mouth, so off to his least favourite place next week.

Have you checked all the folds around his mouth, external folds around the lips? I think there was someone here on the forum whose dog had an infection under the lip fold. Took time to figure out the problem. Once found, I believe treatment fixed it quickly.
