Hi sorry for the long post! I have a very excitable loving 8 month old male Lab. At the end of December after a walk over one of our usual spots when we arrived home I noticed his third eyelid was showing, not protruding out but just covering about half of his left eye ball. He didn’t seem fazed or in pain other than rubbing it with his paw a few times. Me on the other hand was having a complete panic and whizzed him to the vets. They weren’t sure if it was an allergy, something in it or he’s scratched on something when out. They washed it out, gave us drops and piriton and told us to monitor this at home. It cleared up pretty much as quickly as it came on once he’d had the meds and racked our brains at what could of caused it. We quickly forgot about it but then a month later the same thing happened again but this time it was half 10 on the night and he’d just woke up from a two hour nap. Luckily we still had some drops left so gave him some of these and it quickly cleared up. It’s happened another two times since then leading up to it happening again today, each time at different times/points of the day and again once given drops it clears. It’s always the left eye. I am so confused whether it is an allergy as there doesn’t seem to be any pattern or whether it’s an underlying issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, I know ultimately it’s probably a vet job as I want an answer and I will need fresh eye drops but it clears up so quickly and they were unsure themselves last time so I just wondered if anyone had experienced anything similar? Again sorry for the length and TIA for any help!
Not sure about dogs and eyes. Unless a very mild discharge after a beach trip I would always ask the vet. Sorry!
I’d recommend seeing a specialist ophthalmologist vet if your regular vet doesn’t know what’s causing the problem. You don’t want to take risks with eyes. Once sight has gone, can’t get it back. You could phone a specialist eye vet and first ask their opinion to see if you should bring your dog in.
Our choco Zeke has droopier eyelids and we often saw his third eyelid as a puppy. Often you could see a lot of the white of his eye. Our black Rex we barely see any white of his eye. My vet showed me how to clean out his eyes after a dusty walk. He often had discharge. He grew into his eyes somewhat around a year but we still take time to clean them. In the summer and fall the extra pollen in the air affects him. We gave him an antihistamine. We had never noticed this in any of our other dogs so we were sure there was a problem. Nerve racking! After a few vet visits we were assured it was just the way his eyes were. And he did grow into his eyes, if that makes sense. Hopefully your problem is just as simple. But always get a professional opinion. Do you have a pic?
