Dont Youtube was my lesson of the day. I just jinished work and has a moment before dinner so I opened up YouTube to entertain myself. There was a Lab video recommended for me so i started clicking away and before you know it I was in the midst of complete rubbish. Every video posted was absolutely shit. I ended up closing it out feeling angry and upset for these animals and felt sorry for these clients who were seeking behavioural help for their pets. They were completely mislead and what I felt was scammed by these so called handlers. There was abuse, violence, blood and even the videos with clicker training where the hosts were clicking at the wrong times. No wonder people are so lost and confused when it comes to training. CM aside, there was this long haired dweeb who boasted he could stop your dog from jumping in less than a minute. That involved yanking the lead attached to a collar as hard as you possibly can down and to the side. The dogs were crying and then he’d make the dog jump up on someone and do it again. Talk about confusing. I’m beside myself right now. I want to punch these people. I’m sure if i searched specific +R trainers id find them but this dribble is commonplace. People are taking this as gospel and these dimwits have clients who pay them to fix their problems. No wonder you can’t help anyone with their dog at the park. And this dominance thing keeps coming up all the time. Anyhow. I need to go eat and calm down. Can’t even have a conversation about dogs with my coworkers cause they all have their ideas and their dogs are all Alphas and dominant. Lol. Oh well, Glad you guys are hear to at least try and spread the word.
I'm sorry you had to go through that, it must have been awful. If only we could put all of these idiots into a room and knock some common sense into them - using the same methods they employ with the poor dogs.
I don't get it, in this day and age, shouldn't we be more enlightened ? We being humanity I mean. It is really sad, even for humanity, or specially so, our ignorance.
Moderator Note: Edit: video link removed by mod team due to content. ( We don't want to give this "trainer" any more exposure than absolutely necessary! ) He’s one gem.
We are bad monkies. some of us want to do better and develop and some want easy choices. It's depends on how we think of others and animals.
Can you imagine paying for someone to do that to your dog? I would actually lose my mind if someone tried to hurt my baby like that. Poor gorgeous dog I only ever watch kikopup. Then videos of happy dogs doing silly naughty things that make me laugh x
Exactly @SwampDonkey , "how we think of others and animals". That says it all really about each one of us, and then putting that (all of us) together, about mankind. I won't watch the videos though, as I don't want to feel upset.
There are a small number of trainers that I will watch on YouTube and I ignore everything else in much the same way I avoid all the videos of dogs 'misbehaving' or of children and dogs. As with anything to do with the internet and social media there is some really good advice out there and there is some bone chillingly awful - you just have to know the difference.
I knew nothing about dog training or owning a dog before getting a puppy and my natural inclination was to keep her safe from harm...we brought her to a puppy socialization class when she was 10 weeks and they said she was being “aggressive” with the other puppies and grabbed her in either side of her face, shook her and yelled “no” in her face. My OH went crazy on the “trainer” and we walked out...I don’t know how people can watch or actually inflict pain and fear on a living being they have chosen to have in their lives. Hard to watch.
@QuinnM15 that is just not right. Glad no permanent effect on Quinn (I hope). If that had been me I would have walked up and done exactly the same to the trainer and then walked out. We have attended some awful training in the past. I have a fast and hard rule with everybody, my dog my rules and I respect you as much as what you respect me. The last bit for some reason seems to confuse their brains. I wonder why...
For me the warning signs are always when they start saying things like ‘dogs are killed for doing this’. (Insert whatever behaviour) because you know that they are going to do something to the dog that’s is not generally acceptable and are getting their excuses in first. You see it all the time with e collar trainers, that their brutal methods are saving a dog from being killed. I think that’s it’s the only way they can justify it to themselves.
I am not angry, or upset, or emotional - it is strategic...that I think the trainer should yanked by a collar around his neck...everytime he says something stupid. Oh wait. That would mean he would pretty much hang from the collar. Oh well. Such is life. According to his sewerage rhetoric it is okay to cause discomfort to another that causes discomfort to you. And he is causing me SO much discomfort. @Johnny Walker I can understand why you were upset.
That's true when people say, you can find anything on youtube including the best and the worst. I guess this is where common sense should be applied I couldn't agree more with what @edzbird said - because it's on the internet and it's spoken by the so-called professionals - therefore they have weight and credentials - therefore they must be true!! I've learnt the hard way that even the so-called professionals don't know everything, including trainers and vets. Whilst we're on the youtube subject, I'd like to share my love (not-for-profit) project interviewing inspiring people working with dogs. Please don't take this the wrong way, I'm not promoting myself or the dog trainers or anything . It's just a fun interview with people that have been instrumental and helping us in our journey with Bowie and I'd like to share the stories with you guys . Have a look and would love to hear your feedback. Trainer on Trainer Pt.1 and Pt.2
