I see there's a new TV series starting this afternoon on BBc 2 (in UK), they are going to be looking at pet food today. I think it will be worth a watch.

Sorry everyone, think that was a repeat :rolleyes: I fell asleep before the end.

@CMartin, it was mainly talking about the mineral content in foods and whether they met the guidelines - wet v dry. It basically recommended that we should vary what we give our pets.

Thanks so much @selina27. When they say vary, along what lines would that be ?
What did they say in regards to the wetfood? Do they recommend it ?

No . It just made the point that the mineral content in wet foods only met the guidelines in a small percentage of foods, mainly because of the inconsistency of supply. And that paying more for a food doesn't mean better for our dogs. But I think we know that anyway.

The purpose of varying what we give them would be to iron out any discrepancies in mineral content.

The idea of varying foods is also recommended for those feeding raw food, for the same reason: to ensure an adequate intake of micronutrients. Many people will feed just chicken carcasses and tripe for example, which could result in a nutrient deficiency. So, the recommendation is to feed various animals (beef, sheep, fish, duck, etc) and multiple body body parts (heads, feet, tails, organs, muscles, etc) to reduce the risk of micronutrient inadequacy. The same recommendation is given for humans for the same reason. The best advice I was given was to eat the full spectrum of the rainbow; so easy to eat just brown and white food, but then you run the risk of deficiencies. Same principle applies to feeding dogs.

It doesn't really help though if your dog can't eat certain things. If you find something which doesn't upset their stomachs it would be hard to change.

I do forget that some dogs have sensitive stomachs since I have a dog with a stomach that is usually built of steel (except for that horrible incident of HGE). And Labs have quite a reputation for eating everything! But yes, I also do restrict certain foods for my boy that he appears allergic to.

I've always been convinced Moo could eat strontium 90 and find it really morish.
