Our puppy is now 7 months old and we were wondering how many hours is the normal for puppies to sleep at night?

Our boyis a year old, but the sleeping pattern has been the same since he was small. He will drop off about 19:30-20:00, out for last pee at 21:00, then it's still somtimes difficult to get him up at 5:00. I would guess he sleeps at least 16 hours in a 24 hour period.

I often wonder if dogs sleep because of boredom. How many hours do dogs participating in hunting/gundog activities sleep? How many hours do guide dogs sleep?

I often feel bad for my boy that perhaps he’s not doing enough awake activities. He’s 6 yo and i estimate he sleeps 16-18 hours per day. He’s the only dog in the house. Do dogs stay awake more in multi-dog households because they play more?

On weekends he’s awake more cos we drive to walking trails and our outings are longer. But then when he sleeps, it’s hectic snoring!

I had 3 dogs now 2 and they once mature do sleep just the same as your boy. They like to be involved in stuff I'm doing but if it's stuff that bores them they go have a nap. we have playtime train time a doing jobs together and walks but they do love a snuggle on the sofa.

On typical work day Harley sleeps from about 9.30pm until 7.30am, then dozes on and off between 9am-4pm (is walked between 11.30am-1pm). She is then awake from when I get home at 4pm until about 9.30pm.
Weekends are very different. She wakes about 7.30/8am for breakfast / a wee. Dozes until 11am snuggled on the sofa with me, then is awake most of the day until about 5/6pm when she has a nap then is awake again 6/7pm until 9.30pm.

I think it’s true that dogs sleep out of boredom - they can’t watch the TV or listen to the radio.

Guide Dogs, typically, will walk their owners to work - often negotiating pubic transport. After that they will sleep under their owner’s desk until break time then the same until lunch time, when they get a leg stretch outside, then another snooze ‘till the walk home. They play/free run etc once home.

My friend’s GD does a lot more work than that because she works at four different sites in London and her dog has to negotiate underground trains, escalators - you name it.

My two can choose to play with each other when they are bored, but usually they just sleep when not out and about. Keir has training sessions indoors too, but he’s only a pup.

    A nice life I reckon!

    :)
