Pongo's got a very VERY red bottom. He's been doing that skiddy thing on the grass (as if it is itchy), but that is not very unusual. But this time I've noticed his bum is very red - not quite bloody but raw. Is this an urgent take-him-to-the-vet-now thing, or do you think it is a wait-a-bit-and-see-if-it-gets-better thing? And is there anything I should / could do to make it less irritated in the meantime?
I’d maybe take him to the vets. I’d be worried it was sore and then he might not poo and then he might get a bad belly. But I’m a crazy dog mam and even the vets know
Aww! Poor Pongo...I remember when Casper was stung on his bottom by bee, he was very sore for a day or two...
Could it be an allergy? Only thinking as we have just gone through this with Vanilla as she was scooting around and nipping/licking/chewing her back end. We ended up with some cream and after a while it cleared. So yes the bum massage with cream is in your future Hope he gets better soon.
I’d recommend a soft wet cloth to gently wipe it clean. Several times. Might be better at first to squeeze water over it and not wipe too much. Then a nice soothing gel like aloe Vera. Calendula is very healing but can sting. Lanolin milking cream is also good - has chlorohexidine, a disinfectant, and is very soothing. A weak povidone iodine solution is also good for disinfecting. But don’t use too often on broken skin. I’ve been there a lot in the past! Snowie went through an allergy phase in the bum zone. He loved having his bum cleaned and rubbed, obviously gave him much relief. If not improved in 24 hours I’d call the vet.
Oh poor Pongo,. If it's raw and the skin is broken or he's in danger of damaging his skin I would take him to the vet xxx
Well I've just given his bum a nice gentle massage with wipes and then a little fusiderm cream (their website suggests it might be appropriate ). Don't know if it will help, but the expression on his face was almost worth it. There is no single emoji to describe it.
Sounds like anal glands to me and that they are driving him nuts. You can clear them yourself but it’s gross and messy, I’d get the vet to do it. Then he/she can clean him up well and keep that area from getting infected. If that’s what it is. I just went through this but we caught it before he rubbed himself raw.
I think agility took his mind off it! I think it looks less red this evening and he doesn't appear too bothered by it. We'll see what it's like in the morning. Honestly, his face when I was putting cream on his bum was hilarious. A mixture of and and and then a bit more . "Mum has finally lost her marbles completely."
Glad he's feeling better and...um... 'enjoyed' his posterior massage. Watch out or he'll start dragging his bum around just in the hopes of making it a regular feature of life with Pongo.
It does sound like anal glands, but maybe the massaging has done the trick. I hope Pongo’s ‘enjoyed’ more cream-and-massage this morning and is soon back to normal!
