Brady is now almost 2! Spring has finally arrived, and with it pollen. Brady's eyes are not red but he has some yellowish gunk coming from his eyes. I think he might have seasonal allergies. He swims in ponds (not chlorine) and roams the woods several times a week. I have some eye drops but those were for conjunctivitis. My old guy (who sadly passed 2 years ago) had severe allergies as he aged but they never showed up in his eyes. Will get a vet appointment but any advice is welcome.
I would get it tested. It could be conjunctivitis, some types of which are transferrable to you. Or allergies or just an irritation which could lead to further injury and/or infection if he paws at it. I will wait and see, self treat, even ignore some things but NOT EYES.
Maisy had this a while ago and at first I thought it was sleepy dust, then it got worse so I thought it might be conjunctivitis. The vet had a look and checked under the lids for grass seed or a possible irritant caught under there and scratches on her eye, she did not think it was conjunctivitis though. Nothing was found but they gave me some gel to rub in which cleared it up, the other eye did the same a while later and I used the rest of the tube which cleared it up again (so could have been conjunctivitis anyway). Maybe Brady has picked something up whilst sniffing in the woods, or possibly bramble scratches? The vet said never to ignore problems with bleeding, breathing or eyes!
Zeke had issues with both allergies and stuff getting in his eyes when a puppy. He took a while to grow into his droopy eyes. Vet showed us how to rinse eyes after being in the field and we did do some Benadryl. I think it's a good idea to see the vet so you know what you are dealing with and how to properly rinse out.
Well, it's something. Apart from the same kind of thing you'd see on human - maybe a little bit of discharge after sleeping, dogs should not have any kind of eye discharge. Their eyes should be bright, clear, with no discharge. Charlie suffers from allergies that show up in his eyes. He has eye drops to control it year round now - it is definitely made worse by tree pollen but there is something in the household products we use that irritate him as well, but I don't know what (despite best efforts to find out). Because he is chocolate, and his skin is liver coloured I can immediately see if they are worse than normal because he will rub the fur away round his eyes in a matter of hours or just a day or so - I almost never or very rarely actually see him rubbing his eyes. To the extent that I can judge how well I'm controlling the problem by how good the fur is around his eyes.
