David Blunket often walks his guide dogs in the park where the children at our school play. Yesterday visited us with his new dog Barley, a flat coat cross. I,be never seen our wriggly little lot of kids so enthralled during any other assembly, with no offence to David Blunkets talk, they were all watching, and learning, from Barley. If a dog can lie still for half an hour then maybe they can too. Barley is his new dog and only 2 year old (14 in dog years) so only just a bit older than some of the older children. Putting politics to a side, he spoke to the kids at their level about his various dogs and the antics they have got up to over the years and growing up being blind and accepting help when you need it. He told a story of how the Queen offered to help him cut up a lamb chop at a Cabinet lunch, he declined the help but realised that he should have taken up the offer as he was making a bit of a mess of it.
Oh! My not last dog but the one before was a lovely gentle sweet yellow girl called Barley. People who's children were scared of dogs used to come up to us on campsites and ask if they could get to know her because she looked so friendly. I'm always surprised at how this hasn't happened so much with my black dogs who have always been just as lovely as sweet Barley. Is that the Black Dog thing going on do you think? Also I didn't support Labour just because David Blunket had a Labrador ....Honest!
