I feel bad.....half an hour ago I (stupidly) told Pongo that we were going to Agility tonight. But not for another hour and a half. He has spent the last half hour with his head on my knee (and laptop keyboard) gazing up at me in desperation, the look of suffering in his eyes is unbearable. Why are we not already in the car, mum? Come ON, mum! Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaase???? How can you be soooo cruel, mum??? Pongo does not have a concept of "later on". Poor boy.

It been another weird walk a man got scared and though his food at Rory? And a teenager/young man walked up to me and started to chant something disturbing at me. I think I'm ok . Rory s been fab apart from scaring a man by looking at him. He's seemed s bit sad today I nearly cut his walk and came home he seemed flat. We had a nice time but he does seem a bit off. He's been looking after me and making me laugh
I know we say dogs don’t generally understand humans but I sometimes think Stanley understands English. Especially when I watch him with my Mam. She has absolutely zero concept of dog training so she just treats him like a child and hopes for the best. She’s got a blanket for if she gets cold etc and Stanley grabbed it and was trotting around with it and she said to him “I don’t mind sharing it with you but only if you want to lie on it and not chew it”. Well the next thing he’s curled up like a baby on the blanket giving her the good boy eyes. Then she went to put her washing away and said you can only come if you’dont jump on the bed - he didn’t. And when she was putting the washing away she said to him “you could be helpful and bring me the socks”. AND HE DID Maybe she’s actually Dr Doolittle
We have a little fluffy guest. She's upstairs at the moment. She's very cute elderly and has some serious health problems but she is an absolute sweetheart.im looking after her for a while she needs a holiday home. I love having a kitty to stay again she's always so nice to have around.
I went away for a long weekend last week, so my youngest son and daughter-in-law came to dog-sit. Needless to say, I worried whether the dogs would be ok, even though I've had similar long weekends before and Wispa and Tuppence are always excited to see other members of the family. I also knew that there would be other visitors, a barbecue (always good news for the dogs!) and lots of walks. The train home was a bit delayed and, in the afternoon during the journey, I found out that my son had given the dogs a good walk at 5am that morning - I didn't dare ask what time he and my daughter-in-law had left to go to work and tried not to imagine the two dogs, each with all four legs crossed. When I arrived home they were delighted to see me and were more keen on having their supper than going out into the garden. It was short-lived, though. Instead of settling down to watch television with me later in the evening (with Tuppy having her cuddle time too), they both waited for the real fun to begin again, lying by the front door listening... Needless to say, they didn't get a 5am walk the next morning!
There are two 24/7 chained dogs on my corner. The SPCA are involved, local animal control are involved, but nothing's changed. You can smell the piss and shit from a house away. The "owners" clearly won't surrender them, and I'm guessing certain conditions have to be met before a forced surrender can occur and that hasn't been met yet. HOW it hasn't been met is beyond me, but our animal neglect/abuse laws are pretty shit, so I understand that the SPCA's hands are tied. Last night I took Xena out for a quick spin and one of the dogs obviously had got off his chain. He crossed the road to give Xena a sniff and ugh, the smell on him, and UGH the state of his neck. At first I thought that a collar had been absorbed into his skin, then I thought he had growths on it - I couldn't tell without getting up close. But I thought that this was finally enough for me to call the SPCA and say "something's wrong with this dog's neck" and hope for the best, because surely this is "failure to get medical treatment" or something. I get home and tell Joe about it and how I can finally call them myself with something concrete and he says "oh, but the SPCA were there this afternoon". So presumably they got a good look at his neck and hey ho, he's still there. Is there even any point in me calling? Clearly they can't do diddly squat about these dogs. I'm so disheartened.
I'd call them anyway. If they get fed up with being called out they might push the owners to surrender them.
Yeah you're right. I've just checked the animal welfare laws and I can't see how they're not breaking them. Animals are meant to have the opportunity to display normal patterns of behaviour, which they can't do if they're on a short chain! I'll call them once they open because as much as I wish it was, it's not an after hours emergency.
I've just spoken to an inspector. The collar is embedded in its neck. When she told me that I burst into tears because this is so, so wrong. They're trying, but their powers are very limited. I'm sick to my stomach that I have neighbours who are so vile.
I am so sorry for you @Xena Dog Princess, it must be terribly upsetting seeing those dogs suffering. Surely there must be a way to solve this, it is animal cruelty.

That’s just disgusting. If the SPCA can’t do anything, can the police? That sounds like something that should be illegal. Failing that, I’m afraid I would have to find some way of the dogs going missing - after all, if they can get off their chains...
Shocking. It is surely animal cruelty which thy MUST do something about. In the Isle of Man we only have an animal cruelty law but no animal welfare law yet. It's frustrating. Frustrating to caring members of the public like us. Frustrating to the ManxSPCA who are mostly helpless. It's upsetting as well as frustrating. And if someone went in and took a dog to save it? Well they'd be prosecuted for theft! The whole thing is diabolical.
