Hello all: I'm Brent, and have a new labrador retriever puppy, 'Blue'. He's a little over 12 weeks old today, I picked him up at 8 weeks old. I've had dogs my whole life, but never really had any desire to do any real training with them. But think goodness they all have/had all been well natured and easy going. With Blue, I'd like to train him to be a great retrieving bird dog, but more importantly a very well mannered companion for me. By that I mean very obedience and go with me to hunt, fish, hike, run, to the beach, etc... We've been learning sit, lay and place using a clicker and a bunch of treats (good hot dogs) and he gets a couple retrieves a couple times a day. He's doing awesome. I starting teaching him to sit, that's all we worked on just that for a couple weeks. Then I introduced a 'place' mat, luring him on, them clicking and treating, now we are introducing lay. We train 2 or 3 times a day for 5 or so minutes. Question, I want to start recall training ASAP. Do I just add a couple more training sessions in each day? Thanks for any comments. Brent
Hi Brent, welcome to the Forum, from myself and Cassie aged 2, in the UK. The best advice I can give for recall is to buy a copy of the book Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson, it's brilliant
Total Recall is definitely the answer to all your recall questions. And welcome to you from Mags, Tatze and Keir from Manchester UK Tatze is my pet dog, a black Lab and she's five years old. Tatze means 'paw' in German. Keir is my sixth Guide Dog puppy, a yellow Golden Retriever/Flatcoat cross and he's twelve months old on Thursday.
Hi Brent and Blue from Pepper and myself. Pepper is our first lab and just over 13 weeks old and we’re starting to work our way through Total Recall. It’s early days but so far the results are encouraging!
Hi, welcome from me and my labrador, Lucius (his name is latin for light) When Lucius was young we taught him to come to his name in the house at first, just calling his name gently and once he came over, click and treat. We repeated this process till he got it down to a T in the house. We moved to the garden, on a long line, and called him back, click and treat. We played fetch games with him to call him back, and now goes off leash in well secured areas like his doggy daycare. He will come to me every time now. Although he is a very loyal dog. He never really leaves my side. Here is Lucius "retrieving" his favourite seal toy.
Hello and welcome from Maxx and I in Sydney, Australia. Maxx is 7 months and we are struggling with recall training but slowly getting there. It sounds like you are doing a great job with Blue
