    Make your own kefir. Very easy to do at home, much cheaper than buying, and far more bacteria and lactic acid than bought yoghurt.

    So sorry about your dog’s health issues. I have no experience with a post-spay bitch so apologies I can’t help. But I doubt just a probiotic will cure everything - it will be just one part of the holistic approach for good health, and I definitely recommend it as part of an ongoing diet. Best of luck!

    Sorry your girl is having a run of bad luck with infection after infection. I don't think it can be anything to do with her spay though. I don't really know anything about probiotics, sorry. Something I feel I should look into. I will start with kefir..

    I make kefir too. Wish I could get raw goat milk for it, that's what's recommended in my readings. Apparently probiotic requires fresh fruit or vegetable as a prebiotic to enhance the effectiveness of probiotic. I didn't know this but my dog gets them anyway.

    I agree with @MF that probiotic alone is probably not going to change everything. If illness is post spay then I think you need to let the Vet know. Oh, she's on antibiotics so the Vet does know. Well, perhaps a different Vet. AFter repeated UTI, massive doses of antibiotic and no long term help my friends are taking their one year old girl to my Holistic/INtergrative Vet. The Vet is very busy, the appt. is not till July.

    Probiotic = bacteria
    Prebiotic = the food for the bacteria. Good sources of prebiotic are foods high in roughage, particularly brocolli.

    The real aim is the production of lactic acid that the bacteria produce. The lactic acid is key because it produces the optimal environment for good bacteria to thrive in and prevents bad bacteria from thriving. Apparently you can’t change your intestinal biome by ingesting good bacteria alone; rather, you need to provide the optimal environment for good bacteria to thrive, ie you need ingest lactic acid as well as roughage (prebiotic). That’s why I think homemade kefir is the best option, because it produces lactic acid that you can drink.

    All three of our Labs have been spayed, and none of them had any digestive or other issues post surgery, except the normal couple of weeks limited activity. I doubt it the spay had anything to do with her digestive issues. Antibiotics can cause digestive issues though. Most dogs I've been around like yogurt, which is another source of probiotics.
