Hope you’re felling better soon. You certainly set yourself some tough challenges - taking on the dogs is one thing, but travelling in the Tardis for hundreds of miles with two recently fostered dogs and no other help, and a time schedule to keep to as well, is quite another!

Just the sight of Remy keeping all those dogs in order must be good! You wouldn’t dare disobey that cat! :)

Looking forward to seeing more photos. Look after yourself.

Bless you, it’s a unique kind of pain saying goodbye to a loved dog, even when you know they’ll be just fine and they left with tail wagging into an exciting future.

See you for brunch this morning, I’ve brought my decent camera for some Carbön photos.

I have been away for the week and although I managed to keep up to date a little bit, I have now caught up with this fantastic thread. @Emily_BabbelHund, you are awesome. All that travelling with two dogs on your own. Hope you have some down time now to recharge. Lovely photos @Beanwood has posted. Carbon is so glossy and sleek - all credit it to you. I hope Paul settles into his forever home. He is one lucky dog.

I think she’s probably in a relaxation, no-responsibilities deep sleep!

We had a lovely brunch and Carbón behaved impeccably, he’s such a relaxed boy. Sorry, no photos - I left my camera in my car! Paul is at his forever home and one happy puppy :D

Had been wondering and worrying that all was going well with Paul, so pleased to hear that it is. Carbon sounds delightful, I would love to have him but perhaps not good for him if I should die and leave him.

But perhaps you won't -- you look pretty chipper to me :)

Think of the life you could give him, and the forum would scoop him up anyway :)

Even young people can die, to put it bluntly! You never know what is around the corner so just enjoy life and dogs to the full.:)

Sorry, my bluntness can be like being hit with a spade sometimes.

That is possible any of us! I support and have an interest in our local Labrador rescue and many elderly/sick people contact them in advance and have preparations in place in case something should happen. These dogs are then fostered in a home and are typically adopted immediately as they are amazing pets just needing a second home. Something to consider if that is your worry!

"The argument that if the animal's owner dies sooner than their companion, the pet will be orphaned does not appear to me to have much merit. The same argument could be to suggest that single men or women in their 20s and 30s should not be allowed to have pets unless they have family living same city with them who would be willing to take over the pet should they die or become incapacitated."

If you don't believe 20- and 30-year-olds should be excluded from having pets, then nor should you exclude yourself. :)

Yes, but the odds are that the old will die before the young. My present Lab loves his home, he pulls to get back when we are near and is so happy. His life would change.

Nobody is trying to push you into getting another dog. We are just debating the pros and cons of having a dog in older age.
I know that a dog can give a new lease of life to the elderly and when the owner passes on the dog will adapt very well to new surroundings and people. Dogs from shelters do just that. However attached to their owners they are, once they are gone, they still have to live and survive. Dogs do this by simply accepting the new normal.
