Hi I noticed yesterday that my 8 month choc labs left ear looked quite red inside with a bit of black discharge, today he has started to scratch at it. I have gently cleaned his ear using warm water and cotton wool but when you look in his ear the discharge looks as if it goes right down his ear. Obviously I don't want to go too far in to his ear or poke around too much, don't want to hurt the little fellow. He is booked in with the vets in the morning. I was wondering if it could this be canker?
Re: Ear discharge It could well be ear mites. The vet will sort it out and give you the right medication. Quite common in labs, I am afraid, but not serious as long as treated.
Re: Ear discharge Hi there, Dexter is our first dog so I ve only seen a ear yeast infection which was a dark brown wax that a vet visit and drops sorted out x
Re: Ear discharge Hi Thanks for your replies. After reading about ear mites in dogs I discovered that many dogs will bite at top of tail and along their backs, Jake has been doing this also, so it could well be mites. Hopefully the vet will sort my boy in the morning.
Re: Ear discharge Back from the vets with Jake, he had an injection to help with immflamation in his ear and also gave Canaural drop for 5 days. Hopefully this will sort him out. He really wasn't happy about someone poking about in there but he was such a good boy.
Re: Ear discharge Just a little tip, its easier to clean the boot polish like ear wax, out with olive oil and cotton wool, Im pretty sure veg oil would be fine too. Maggiex
Re: Ear discharge Bloomin' ear infections! Drat them. We've spent more time with them than without so far! We investigated everything from mites to allergies - I won't bore you - right now, we are infection free and on a programme to keep ears clean and at the right Ph balance to stop any bacteria and yeast getting out of control. We're 3 weeks in and so far so good...
Re: Ear discharge Thanks Guys, once this ear infection has cleared up I'm going to try to find a good Flea/Tic/Mite solution. My vet said there are drops I can use regular to keep his ears clean, only problem is I cant remember what it was called. Any suggestions ?
Re: Ear discharge I am almost as boring on ear infections as stuffing kongs... : got to get out more. It depends on why you are keeping his ears clean - I mean, why you have to. If your dog is prone to a build up of wax, or ear mites are a problem, or (like we think right now, it might change), you are trying to keep a ph balance to inhibit the growth of yeast or bacteria. Ours (right now) is the last one and we are using Cleanaural. This states that it is "a pH balanced routine ear cleaner. For the removal of moderate ear wax and debris where the ear drum is intact. Does not compromise the antimicrobial activity of Canaural". We use advocate each month as protection against ear mites: http://www.animalhealth.bayer.com/4906.0.html which claims to be 98% effective if used 4 weeks apart. (But swimming within 4 days of application reduces this, which we have to look out for).
Re: Ear discharge Don't get me started on ear problems with barley. His ears have to be cleaned every week with wipes, as they get very dirty and full of wax, which makles him itch and scratch, and then makes his ears very sore and has been know to make his ears bleed from scratching them. We try to avoid putting drops in his ears as he hates it and it makes him scratch his ear in his effort to try get the stuff out of his ear, and he gets very restless and usually wont sleep that night, he is a very sensitive soul. He has had ear infections, punctured ear drum, grass seeds, grass seedds, grass seeds, grass seeds, oh did i mention grass seeds, he has had about 4 seperate incidents with grass seeds in his ears, the most he had was 7 in one ear . For barley his feet, ears, backside and skin are all linked and as soon as one kicks of the other start too.
