Homer tore off a claw a few weeks ago. The claw is no longer painful and healed, just needs to grow out now but Homer has been licking it almost constantly recently. There’s no sign of redness or infection. We’ve been cleaning it and putting a sock over his paw to prevent him from licking all the time. We change the sock daily and he doesn’t have it on during walks. The sock gets quite smelly. Hubby suggested that dogs sweat through their paws and it’s just a sweaty dog smell. Or is there something more sinister?
Hi @Jes72 , I think your husband is right, they do sweat through their paws, not from their bodies like us, which is why they pant to lose heat as well.
We looked after a friend’s Irish Terrier whilst they were on holiday, and she’d cut her paw and needed stitches. She had a sock over her paw and it was always smelly. We even took her back to the vet who checked everything out, no sign of infection.
Yes, he licks the sock a lot. Luckily I got 6 socks for £5 so they can go through the wash. A special dog boot on Amazon was over £20.
