Hi, In this hot weather I walk my lab in the woods to keep cool, but there is a brook and a couple of ponds, I’m worried that there is a health risk because of the water not moving, basically just water cooking in the heat getting stagnant? Can it make dogs ill? Bacteria etc... She loves to get in and cool off, but is it best to stay away whilst there’s no rain around?
Yes, stay away from ponds and waters with no moving water. The chance of blue algae is very substantial! When in touch it gives irritation, tummy upset etc!
Blue Green Algae is a significant problem in some areas of the US. The City of Salem, Oregon has an advisory for their water for Blue Green Algae toxin. They get their water from a mountain lake, and it has been closed to most recreational uses because of the Algae.
