I have posted once before about Aspen chattering his jaw when he would get excited at obedience class and it didn't really worry me then. But now, we have noticed that when he is smelling something and very into it, he will walk away with a chattering jaw and drool a lot. He doesn't drool with thick, gloopy slobber either, his drool is very thin and watery and comes out in drops. It is just weird to me because I've never seen a dog do that before.

Well I don’t have a lot of experience with this, but this sounds like what I’ve heard of being described as how an entire male responds to a bitch in heat. :)

Yes it is it even had a name it begins with a F but I can't remember it. Rory does it and the teeth chattering is very funny

Ella sniffs and sort of 'eats' the air when there's an interesting smell on the breeze. I wouldn't describe it as teeth chattering though so probably different

My duaghter’s last Greyhound used to do this (if it’s the same thing you are describing). It used to make us smile (not the drooling ). We always interpreted it as him being happy.

I would say your boy is becoming a man!!! He has probably smelt a bitch in heat - this is a classic response.

I watched a video of a dog doing it and it looks just like that! He does it inside our house, though and we don't know anyone with an un-spayed female. Weird!

They can really smell them. Rory does it in the mornings when he's sniffed Moo and she's spayed. He's excited so it seems to encourage chattery teeth

Odie and Axel both used to do this after giving each other’s penis a lick

Sometimes it's just excitement but the dog realizes he can't get to what interests him. Cats often do the same thing when watching birds out a window. Dogs not so much, I think, but I have seen dogs do it in class and no intact bitches around, though scent might have lingered.

OMG Finn does this sometimes when he smells something - I have no idea what it is because usually it's just grass or a bush. But he will start licking and his teeth start chattering and he drools a bit. I always found it kind of odd o_O
