Aspen has been getting these little scabs in areas around his ears, in his armpits, etc. Can't get a good pic of any cause that would be a two-person job with him. My boyfriend's mum's pup has the same exact thing. Her vet has chalked it up to skin allergies and has given him anti-histamines but they don't seem to be working. She said the vet just said they were hotspots but clearly it is something different as they have owned labs the last 20 years and know what a hotspot looks like. Also dogs have no obsessive licking in these areas as they are hard to reach or impossible to reach for our dogs!

They are very odd scabs. They are around a tuft of hair. Often times they do not lie on the skin of Aspen, but just off of the skin, stuck in his hair. It is really very odd and I think it is worse in summer as I didn't notice anything over winter. I will bring him in soon because we have to do a fecal sample anyways, but figured I would ask if you guys have ever experienced this because the vets seem to be puzzled as well!

Can labs get blood work done to see what they are allergic to?

How frustrating! I'm afraid I don't have any personal experience with this, but we do have a few articles on allergies that might be of interest:
    Common allergies in Labs
    Dog food allergies
I hope it gets resolved soon for you!

Based on what you are describing, my dog Brimley has a few of these. Would you say it is a scabby bump on the skin? I actually took him to a dermatologist vet yesterday for this and other issues. They said that he has allergies (to what, we don't know) and that the scabs are inflammations related to his allergies. He is to start allergy medicine and antibiotics. Def. talk to your vet about it.
