We`ve had a letter from our Vets , the usual pre op info about Millies spay . The last dog I had spayed was not in the UK so this is new to me, that a blood test is recommended prior to the operation ? I cant recall Sam having one prior to his castration , I know our Vet isnt a rip off merchant but , before I ask about the necessity , I wondered if anyone else had been recommended to have a bitch blood tested before a spay ? Maybe its because there is no history on her background , no health records or maybe it is routine these days ? Thank you x
Re: Are these necessary ? The letter says that having a pre anaesthetic blood test may help to identify any underlying health issues . Then goes on to say that the identification of any issues does not guarentee the absence of anaesthetic complications : : Humm , seems to be a bit of a contradiction in terms then

I have heard from a friend of mine who is a vet that she has come across several cases of heart worm which were previously undiagnosed but had caused bleeding which was difficult to control during routine operations like spaying. Caddie didn't have a blood test prior to her spay earlier in the year.

Re: Are these necessary ? Bess was spayed earlier this year; we were offered a blood test but the vet advised "She is young and healthy so it isn't necessary". Alice
Re: Are these necessary ? I did have the blood test done before Bracken had a minor op as he'd previously had an abnormal kidney function result. Luckily all was well which reassured me it was ok to go ahead, but normally with a dog that I had no reason to think was anything other than healthy, I certainly wouldn't bother.
Re: Are these necessary ? My vet advised this for my previous dog who had an op when he was older (maybe about 9?) to check for normal organ function. It was because he was older though - wasn't a routine thing.
Re: Are these necessary ? We weren't offered a blood test. Though in spite of Lilly being on NSAIDs for the last 2 years still no suggestion of blood for kidneys. Hey ho.....

When Dexter went in for his castration and first tail op we were offered the test but the vet didn't recommend it because he was such a fit young dog......they said it was more for older dogs with diagnosed or suspected underlying health problems,or dogs who's history they were unsure of....... They noticed he bled more than normal during the surgery so when he had the second tail op they conducted the test and that is the only way that we have found out about the Ehrlichia issue we are dealing with now ........so that makes me glad we had the test but we wouldn't have done if our hand hadn't been forced Bet I haven't helped you at all now have,sorry x
