I have a 9 yr old choc lab and last couple of days he's been struggling on his back legs.... today with the heat I decided to give him a shower (he's malting) to help just because I thought with him panting alot in heat I needed to get all extra hair off him he struggled to get in n out of the bath he's a big boy so I helped as much as I could. He keeps barking and I keep taking him out he will only get up n get some water then sit back down but seams very fidgety like he doesn't know what to do with himself I know he's getting on but unsure with how I can help him. Don't want to go see a vet unnecessarily for massive get bill... just some help or advice would be great right now I give him plenty of water don't walk him in the heat keep him as cool as possible. If anyone has any advice would appreciate it very much. Thank u
I have an older dog around the same age. While it's hot, I just don't take him out. He has a stroll off lead if he wants too and very early, and that's it. He is happy just chilling out on his memory foam bed by his fan all day. If your dog is struggling with his back legs, don't walk him, let him potter in the garden instead. Certainly, don't bath him, as it looks like he is in some discomfort in his back or hips. Fidgeting, finding it hard to settle is another clue your dog is uncomfortable and could be in pain. I know you are worried about a large vet bill, however, a visit to the vet is the best thing you can do for him right now.
I would be making an appointment with the vet. As @Beanwood says the fidgeting could be due to pain, as could the panting. Also if there is a oroblem with his hind legs it really should be checked for cause.
Hi Hollie, and welcome to the forum - hope you can arrange a vet check for your boy, you obviously love him and want him to be well. You say he is a big boy, and if you think he is overweight that might be contributing to the problem. Whatever the cause he really should have full use of his back legs, and may just need something simple like some painkillers. The vet shouldn't do anything that would cause you a massive bill without your permission, especially if you make it clear that you just want to start with a consultation. But you do need to find out what is wrong.
