Just throwing situation out there, kinda venting, kinda just bouncing off others...

We’ve had two family dogs, starting as pups, through our working family years. As y’all know, it’s a struggle and often not very fair the the dog. When we had put our 2nd, a yellow girl named Maizie, put down about 10 years ago I wanted so badly to get another but I knew with wife and I still working, and kids grown and out, it wasn’t a good fit for our lives. So we waited... Eight years went by till I retired and immediately got myself a yellow boy pup to be my sidekick. Tonka is now almost 3 yo and I love him more everyday.

So now, my daughter wants a full bred yellow pup. She’s has a nice suburban home and lives with her boyfriend. They both have full time jobs and busy lives. She’s asked for my opinion about getting a puppy, or dog, and I’ve given it...Don’t. But it’s her life, I can’t and won’t tell her what to do. Of course she reminds her mom and I did it. And she’s right. I offered to support her regardless, watching the dog most workdays.

I’m pushing her to please at least consider a rehome/rescue that is through the puppy stage and partially trained, housebroken, etc. There are so many (purebred) out there with fosters that you know what you’re getting for the most part. So anyway.....we shall see!

    Thanks for “listening”.

We have only had adult rescues. With our first dog, we both worked full time. She was about 18 month old a collie x. She was walked in the morning. I would go home at lunch time and give her another walk. She was walked after work and then again before bed. She was a happy girl and this worked for all of us.

I now work part time - afternoons. We got Coco at 16 months. He is alone from 12:30 to about 5:30. This is quite a long time, but he seems perfectly fine with it. He gets lots of stimulation outside of this period with training etc.

The big plus for someone like your daughter is that they usually come house trained and able to be left for a reasonable period. You say your daughter and her bf have "busy lives" - she really needs to ensure that her busy life has a big amount of spare in it for a dog.

Good luck with what ever decision she makes - I see much dog sitting in your future - but hey, that's no bad thing is it?

Thanks. Would love another puppy in my life (especially one that I don’t have to pat for) but would love an older dog too.
