Unsurprisingly our pup has chewed his crate bed to bits! Anyone got any cheap suggestions for comfortable living rather than buying a new one?
Vet bed every time. We got some before Pongo arrived with us (aged 9 weeks). We'd been recommended it so I looked it out in Pets At Home, and I was horrified at the price compared to "normal" puppy fleece bedding. But we got some anyway - about a metre in length, and we cut it in two (one bit for the house, one for the car). Well, that piece of vet bed became his bed, chew toy, tuggy, enemy-that-must-be-killed, comforter, and constant plaything. It is still in one piece and Pongo is now nearly 5 years old and more than 40kg. He still plays with it more than any other thing that he has, and it is pretty much as good as new (although not pristine white any more!). Can't recommend it highly enough.
Absolutely yes, vet bed. I've still got a piece that's 4 yrs old. Also we've used an old style blanket, not great to chew on as well as an old duvet in a cover. . This depends on how insistent your pup is on chewing through material. Also in the first few years I bought cheap beds from UK stores like home bargains... £12 for a bed I put through the machine a few times then threw away. In the early months just use whatever you have to hand if you think it wil be destroyed, old towels, sheets, etc. It doesn't have to be super luxurious.
Our 7 mth puppy is now on his 3rd bed. We pay about £35-£50 per bed, and after a while, pup decideds to chew/rip the material and pull out the stuffing. He’s also just started to ‘hump’ his bed, and I often come into the kitchen to see his bed and blankets are scattered everywhere. I’d look for a bed with tough material. You can soften it with a nice blanket or big unwanted or old bath towels. Avoid fleece as dog hair sticks to it like glue. Some dog beds are fluffy and are rather easy for puppy teeth to nibble at. Our boy currently has a ‘Losy Pet’ bed from eBay and it’s great so far. The middle cushion is in a zipped bag. Great to re-stuff if goes flat and good to clean also. Hope that helps.
