Our Luna who is nearly 11 months old still won't jump into boot of car! What can we do to persuade her or how to get her too! The most she might do is paws up, we have fed her meals to get her in and mostly she will but any other time is a struggle, even when she is going on one of her walks! We are at a loss as sometimes she just plants herself and becomes no help at all!
Hi from Emma and Mason you could try a ramp if that makes it easier on her joints as jumping in and out isn’t great for any dog in the long run. But it is tricky as they get bigger or excited when they want to get out. Treats can help plus time might be needed as we too have to make extra time as Mason 1 yr often lies down
We had thought about one of those as when you need to move in a hurry you have no chance! Do you use one for mason?
Not yet but I’m seriously thinking about one as he is a chunky Labrador and I’m very worried about the pressure on his joints it’s on my to do list and he doesn’t go out in the car that often 2 times a week would be more if I let him
Hi we brought a ramp for our last girl and it was brilliant,you need to get a solid good one that doesn't bend or buckle when your dog walks on it but it's worth every penny.winter It really helped with her joints as she had arthritis and it saved my poor husbands back and also from getting covered in mud in the winter as he lifted her in and out. We have a new pup now and she's going to use it straight away.
My dog and I both hated the ramp I bought him in preparation for his TPLO. I trained him to use it but we both thought it was a lot of bother plus took up half of the back of my small car. Maybe I just had the wrong kind of ramp! What did work was the paws up that it sounds like your dog already uses. Paws on the back bumper, then I lifted his bum into the back of the car. For getting out, I used his harness to help him down. Frankly, I'm glad we did it this way. It saved his joints and I didn't have to mess around with that ramp. I do have to say, however, that eventually the lifting in and out got old and I got a car he could simply step into instead of having to jump up into. And the added bonus was no more 'pee pee hand' as when I grabbed him to lift up after a walk, it always seemed that I grabbed a wet bit.
We taught all of our dogs "Paws Up" so we could get them in without a ramp. Cooper can jump into Suburban bed from a standing start, but Tilly needs a boost.
My 10 month lab Tilly wouldn’t jump in so I got a ramp which she used happily but then the other day she just jumped in!... I always lift her out though to protect her joints but it’s easier than lifting her in, though rather messy if she’s wet and muddy!... Maybe your Luna wil decide to jump in one day too. I do put treats in to encourage her....
