my dog started her season on 1st July, she was showing discharge for about 3 week (stopping around 23rd). Now her boobies and bits are still swollen. I'm reluctant to take her out in case she can still get pregnant, with her bits being swollen. She is fine in herself and although a little anxious, this is only slightly increased to how she usually is. She is 10 months old. Any advice would be great.

I don't have any advice to offer and we went through this with Marley, I took her to the vet on 9/24 because we suspected she had started her first season, on 10/23 we had an appointment to have her spay. During her recovery I received a phone call saying all went well and BTW she was still in heat, I was a bit shocked.

A dog should never be spayed in heat, it is a far more risky surgery because the blood supply to the uterus is vastly larger than when they are out of heat, and also runs the risk of them getting 'stuck' in a false pregnancy - behaviour-wise - permanently.

The recommended time to spay a dog is in anestrus, and to be sure of that, to aim for halfway between heat cycles. Since the average heat cycle is 6 months, waiting until 3 months after a heat finishes, is typically recommended. If a bitch was in heat on 24th Sept, you would therefore want to spay no earlier than the end of December - certainly not a month later. All vets should know this. If they didn't, I'd change vets...

Thank you for that information maybe it can help someone else, however, I had no idea...... What do I do now? She is a loved family pet and we wanted to give her the best chance at life. This makes me very sad and a bit angry.
