    Hey everyone!

Just looking for some advice. We currently have a 4 year old
Chocolate lab - boy. He has started to calm down now and we are thinking about getting him a companion. We are looking at getting a dachshund. Has anyone had any experiences with introducing a new dog to the family? Did you have any problems? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

Hi there, your dog is at a good age to consider an addition to the family. Lots of members here have more than one dog, and we'll be able to help you with the introduction process. However, many dachshunds suffer from severe and painful back problems (more information here) and if your dog likes to play quite boisterously, a dachshund may not be the ideal companion. If you are looking for a smaller dog, one that will enjoy the full benefit of playing with your still young lab might be a better bet.

I would get another Lab, or other gun dog, or gun dog mix close to the size of a Lab. They will be able to play on more equal terms. Dachshunds have a reputation for being kind of snippy, which may not make them the ideal playmate for a Lab.
