yesterday I hugged and cried over the lifeless cold body of my little baby Blake. He was ten months old and I always knew the day would come when I have to say goodbye but I never ever expected it after 8 special months with him.
He had intestinal surgery for a blockage last Friday and appeared to be doing well over the weekend and was then released on Monday to come home. But he stopped eating once again and was so lethargic, we took him back to the vets and an ultrasound revealed huge amounts of fluid in his abdomen. They performed emergency surgery only to find he was filled with blood and his wounds from surgery had not clotted or scanned or healed over. He never woke up from the anaesthetic he was just too weak.
We are absolutely devastated, within 7 days our baby boy is gone. I don’t know what to do with myself. I feel as though I have lost a child and been robbed of so many years of memories with my sweet little angel. I’m just heartbroken.

I cannot think of him or smell his scent in his room without crying uncontrollably. I can’t belive he’s really gone. It feels like it’s not true and they have made a mistake.

Simply heartbroken for you, such a tragedy. Thoughts are with you at such a devastating time.
You did everything you possibly could for Blake, he was in the very best hands, hope as you move forward, that one day you will take some tiny piece of comfort from that.

I am not sure where in the world you are based, in the UK there is a very good pet bereavement support line run by the Blue Cross you might find helpful right now.

What a dreadful thing to happen for you, such a shock, my heart feels deeply for you. I wonder if he had a genetic problem if his blood never clotted.

I am wondering the same thing. I just wish tests were done before operating to find out. I’m full of regrets.

Please, please don't feel regret, it wasn't your fault. If there was a fair amount of evidence to suggest this was warranted..bleeding gums, bleeding/bruising at an injection site (or previously at vaccination visits) for example, there wouldn't be any reason to screen beforehand.

It might be worth talking to your vet regarding the likelihood anti-clotting condition being inherited. I only suggest this as it may then be advisable to let the breeder know.

Again, deepest condolences at this very sad time x

Thank you for your kind words. The tests came back yesterday confirming Blake was haemophilic and had a problem with his blood clotting. Over 5 days he slowly bled internally until he was too weak to make it through. I am distraught, my beautiful boy must have been in so much pain but still allowed us to pick him up without snapping at us or snarling. He was a loyal friend till the very end. I never knew the last time I would see him alive was the journey to the vets. He lay so peacefully on my brothers lap in the back of the car and I remember looking into his beautiful eyes and praying that he would get better. I would do anything to bring him back.
