Well, after doing as much as possible in research as I could before getting buddy, there’s still soooo much to learn, and for one thing I never knew there were so many types of collars.

We originally bought a harness but it’s a little big at the moment, so we just bought a basic collar for if he is on a long lead when I take him to work in the yard etc.

I have never entertained the idea of any of these pinch or e-collars or whatever they are, but should I use a specific type of ‘normal’ collar? I don’t want to get anything wrong for when we start walking. I’ll probably buy another harness if the one we have is still too big when he’s ready for walk.

It's great you're thinking about the equipment you want to use. :)

I'm a huge advocate of harnesses over flat collars. Depending on the law where you live, you do sometimes need (officially and legally and all that) a flat collar as well as a harness - just so you can put the ID tag on the flat collar. You just need a regular flat collar which buckles up or clips up (either is fine).

But in terms of what you're attaching a leash to, I would always recommend a harness. My fav harness is the Perfect Fit, and I understand this is available in the US from CleanRun (if you're in the US).

If you already have a harness but it's a little big, I'd suggest buying a smaller one for now - you don't want him pulling into that collar or getting it jerked around his neck when he hits the end of the leash. :)

I first bought a collar for Mango. He wore it for 2 or 3 weeks before I went to buy a harness.
At 8 weeks he didn't pull, and he only wore it outside to get used to it, and when we went for a walk. After buying a harness he only wore collar when my grandmother took him out (he bit like crazy until he was 15 weeks, so she couldn't put on any harness, no matter the type), so that is twice a week and that was just potty break.
I don't recomend collar on a long lead, puppy could run after something or get scared really quick. When they run for 5 or 10 metres, the sudden stop could damage his neck.

Thanks guys, I’m trying to teach him early about not pulling, we walk around my timber yard. I’ll try a better fitting harness I think, only a few more days till we can go out:)
