I was suppose to get a yellow lab a few weeks ago but we had to put this on hold. Anyways, now we have to get a different lab. The sire was black and dam yellow, all puppies are black and 3 chocolate. I read in the archives on here that Chocolate labs are harder to train, more hyper and stubborn and sometimes do not listen. Does the color really make a difference, a lab is a lab no? Sure each dog has its own personality but are Chocolate Labs really different that black or yellow, is this true or a myth. Thank you

It's a myth. Each puppy is first of all a product of the breeding choices of the breeder and second of all, an individual.

We have a chocolate girl (now 4) who was "the puppy without a turn off switch" who is amazing now and a chocolate boy that I dubbed #BestPuppyEver. I have a yellow boy now who is wonderful with his humans but is the tasmanian devil with the other dogs.....and a yellow girl (now three) who was the worst biter I've ever raised and who was so independent she spent most of her first three weeks here tethered to me because she was so fast to get into trouble!

Myth...all individual personalities like people. My sister has a chocolate, she’s wonderful never had any issues, a very chilled girl.

I have a14month chocolate lab and I train him daily and he just loves doing these. He is a very affectionate young dog and I get plenty of love from him. He has his hyper moments not many but when he does they are quite funny.
Yes mine can be a little stubborn when on a walk he knows which way he wants to go! And like some dogs he doesn’t listen and it can come down to age and if something better is going on.

Thank you for your honest response. I selected a chocolate, hope all will be fine. Got her a snuggle puppy, I hope it will help the first few nights.

I have a lovely, show line bred chocolate labrador. He has the most gentle temperament, bombproof in any situation, and that in itself is worth its weight in gold. He is good in the field, a great dog to work with picking up. The only issue we have had is high testosterone, which can make life interesting! But then isn't because he is chocolate, some dogs have higher levels, I think, than others, that's down to nature :)

I have a chocolate boy who is as mad as a box of frogs. :D He's seriously bonkers. He is so difficult to train it sometimes isn't at all funny - although mostly is an absolute hoot, since he is also hilarious.

He is fabulous though. He just has so much STYLE. :D

Is this because he is chocolate...dunno. His black sisters and brothers are all boringly normal.

It MIGHT be that some dogs are bonkers, and people just remember the bonkers chocolate ones more....dunno.

Sounds amazing! A sensible friend for Benson then...

No, not a sensible friend for Benson, although another chocolate labrador is soo tempting! :)

Gosh! I had forgotten about that! Thank you for reminding me...:) A while ago now, just goes to show how important training gradually onto game can be. A good example of handler error above.

Luckily we moved on a bit more slowly from then...a lesson learnt..

If it makes you feel any better I have a black lab and he is absolutely bonkers.

I’ve never known a dog like him in my life. He can open doors/drawers/cupboards. He outsmarts me on a daily basis.

He’s funny and charming and I wouldn’t swap him for the world. I love every single bit of him ☺️

I've had chocolates and Black's. Theres not really any difference at all. If your breeder breeds for health and temperament you'll be fine. It takes training patience and time with a lab and when they are young they are hard work. I really wouldn't get worried about colour.

You are very welcome. :D I'm sure I could dig out one or two more if you like... ;):D

Well, I'm very inclined to argue that there is no reason why Chocolates should be bonkers, and I sort of believe that. :D Just so happens I have a bonkers one.

He is totally fabulous though! And I think probably the best dog I'll ever own, in so many ways. Just not all that easy that's all. But who wants easy!?! :D

We have had 3 Chocolates, and they have all been great dogs. They have had different personalities, but all got along with other people and dogs. The first was a rescue, who was fabulous. The other two we raised as pups. Both were crazy pups, (mostly in a good way) and grew up to be great dogs. Both pups were pretty much house broken by 16 weeks and had the run of the house most of the time after that.

I would like to thank you all for the replies about my question, I am more at ease now. Also learned one other lesson that I knew but is now solidified, do not believe 99% of what you read on the web.
