My lab is an 8 month old rescue mix and we think she’s either part Pointer or Shepard along with Lab. Ever since we’ve received her she tends to scratch allot and bite her skin from the hip down to the base of her tail. We’ve had our vet check her out and it’s not fleas and her skin doesn’t appear to be infected or anything. We’ve asked our vet about allergies and he says she’s too young for allergies. Any suggestions ? As for food we have been giving her Purina Puppy Chow. At times we mix it with either rice, chicken, or scrambled eggs ( no milk or salt, eggs only ) Sometimes mix in some lite mozzarella cheese but very little. She handles the food well and her poops have been normal.

I'm having a similar issue with Lincoln. We were feeding Purina Pro Plan Sport. Although he did well on it as far as weight gain and solid stool he started a lot of itching and scratching. I read that some dogs are sensitive to corn , rice and glutens.
I did some research and I recently changed to Victor Dog food.

I chose Victor Nutra Pro as it has 90% protein from meat and only 5% grain.
Hopefully that will solve the itchy issue.
Not sure if you're looking to change foods but it might be worth a try.

Hi Jade, Keep me updated. I'm all for changing food if it will work. I did check and there is one store in my area that sells Victors.

Not all skin problems start inside.
A dog biting /chewing his back legs or tail could be an indication of pain, I know of two dogs that lick and chew their legs and they have problems with their anal glands.

Externally there could be many reasons, soap powder used in bedding, air fresheners, floor cleaner.

Any parasite treatment can cause itching of the skin.

I would eliminate external cause first before switching foods.

Good advice. However in my case I'm mainly switching off Purina because I want a better food.

Jade, I really try to drive by the different processed, as I feed fresh but yes I would definitely change from purina as it's not got the best reputation.

Hello. Lincoln had been has been eating the Victor Pet Food for about a week now and it seems to have solved the itchy issue. Still has solid stool with this food as well.
