I hate to even be posting this. We bought our young girls a puppy for Christmas and they aren’t adjusting well at all. They are terrified of him and don’t want to be around him at all. It’s caused so much chaos and it’s not fair to him and our daughters are not ready for a puppy. Trying to find him a good home where kids aren’t afraid of puppies.. this was our first puppy. Our girls are not used to dogs at all. It was poor judgment on our part to get him not knowing if they would be ready :(

Hi there, I am so sorry to hear that you are struggling with your new puppy. The first few days with a new puppy can be very tough.

There is an article on the main site that may help you, it's called Help For Anyone Thinking Of Rehoming A Dog. I hope you find it helpful. With a very young puppy, the usual first step is to call the breeder. Good breeders are very committed to the welfare of their puppies and will always take back a puppy if the new owners cannot cope. They normally have a waiting list of approved families and will be able to find a new home for your puppy with the minimum disruption.

Please shout if you have any questions about the article or the best way to rehome your pup. But before you do so, you might also want to read up on The Puppy Blues. which is about the period of adjustment after getting a new pup. And this article which is about how to ensure puppies and children can play safely together.

In the meantime, do try and build some space between the puppy and your children (using baby gates, and short spells in the crate) to give them both a break and help get some perspective on your situation. It is difficult to make decisions when the children and adults too, are all very upset. You might find this article helpful too: What To Expect From A New Puppy

Let us know what you decide and try not to feel dreadful if you do decide to return your pup to the breeder, at this young age your little one will soon settle into a new home.
