Hi all. I've recently taken on a female lab, Indy, rescued by me when she was 5 months old, she's not far off 8 months now. She's beautiful. A complete handful when we first brought her home, not training from her previous owners and was biting very badly. In fact first two weeks i was covered in bruises! But things have started to calm down, trained her on a whistle ( like i have with my previous labs) and she's doing great. Yesterday was the start of her first season so if anyone has any advice that would be great. I have normally had dogs so Indy is the first female dog ive owned. Ali
Hi Ali, A very warm welcome to the forum to you and Indy! We've got some information on caring for female dogs during their seasons on the main site here, but the main thing as i'm sure you know is just to make sure she doesn't go anywhere public where she might meet an intact male until the season is over
Welcome. Make sure your gates and fences are strong and clear of things the dogs (including your own) can use to climb in and out of your garden. My intact bitch and a German Pointer lifted the iron gate out of its hinges. Luckily we were able to round her up before anything happened. I had to use strong rope to tie the gate securely.
