Hi everyone! Reggie looks like he’s got a bit of dandruff, although he doesn’t smell of anything. How often should we be bathing him? - 11 weeks old tomorrow.
I would be hesitant to bathe him too much as I imagine it would wash away the natural oils , but I am certainly no expert.
Hi @Mikew very little if at all. Bathing with shampoo strips the natural oils out of the dog's coat. Try brushing instead.
Our dogs don't get bathed, unless they get into something that stinks, which is uncommon. They do swim when they can, but actual baths are rare. I doubt if they get one a year. Ours don't mind baths, or more accurately showers. We just open the shower door and they walk in with us. We just don't see a need to do it very often. Labs shed a lot, but they seldom really need a bath.
Meg is 5 next month, I have never bathed her. She gets the odd dunk in a river, or resovoir but other than good old Yorkshire water...that’s it

Just brushing. Buy a Furminator Deshedding Brush for short hair if you have a Lab. Very expensive, (at least here in Australia) but it will save your floor from looking like it is covered with hair tumbleweeds.
I've been putting off buying one of these because they are expensive, but I'm also sick of emptying the Dyson twice a week AND STILL finding hair everywhere! Maybe it's time to bite the bullet.
I know, I dealt with the issue for years. Eye watering expensive, as is all good dog equipment in Australia. In the end I asked a groomer what to do about the dead hair problem. I have never had a dog that needed a groomer. Stupid me for not asking sooner. But he gave me solid advice.
Furminator is a great tool. I brush Mango twice a week, but I guess he is one of the labs who shed a lot all the time. I still run roomba every day. He is 10 months today and I've never bathed him. Dandruff could be a result of an alergy, if it doesn't get better in a few days, try changing something he is eating; treats or kibble (or proteine in raw food).
I’d just add oils to the diet, some fish oil, coatex, coconut oil or even a combination of all 3. Brushing will stimulate the skin and help too. It may be just dry skin. I’ve never washed a dog except to show.
You must vacuum more often than me. I also wanted to add, Chewie is nearly 10 months and has never been bathed, only hosed in fun and he has been swimming in the harbour. Most dirt just brushes right off him.
Hi there - your pup looks the spitting image of our 11 week old pup Buddy who also had really bad dandruff , I stopped giving him the raw beef mince that his breeder had started him on top of his kibble and that almost instant helped - he’s still a little scratchy but 90% less dandruffy and also brush him a little every day.
This cured our Lab Scooby of his dandruff. Our current 2 continue on it and their coats are lovely and shiny.
Willow is 17 weeks and just had her first bath I have no idea what she rolled in but it didn't half stink.
