So my 7 month old puppy has peed on the floor in our room 2 out of the last 3 nights in the middle of the night. The first time he did it, he tried to get our attention, but we just figured it was him wanting to get up early. So he was sent back to his bed and eventually ended up peeing on the floor. Our fault for not letting him out, but the reason we didn't is because he hasn't had an accident in the house in months. He is fully potty trained. The second night, he didn't pee overnight because he was let out in the middle of the night when my girlfriend used the restroom. Today, he peed again in the room at like 4 in the morning. No warning signals at all. That's when I made the decision to take him in to the vet, simply because this isn't normal for him. I also noticed him peeing more frequently in spots he normally wouldn't, even though not much would come out when he did. Other than the accidents and peeing more frequently, everything else has been normal with him. There is no change in his behavior. Same happy puppy as usual. So when I took him to the vet this morning, the vet said his private part was a bit irritated. They ran a urinalysis test. However, the vet said the machine they used to run the test was having some issues and that he would call me tomorrow for the results. He did give us antibiotics to give him for the irritation and possible UTI. I would think even though the results aren't official, he would have to be pretty sure it was a UTI to give him antibiotics. He also gave us a cone that Buddy has to wear for a week to prevent him licking his privates. That's what's really killing Buddy, as well as my girlfriend and I, as he just looks so depressed with it on. Does anyone have experience with their male dog getting a UTI? I read it's more common in females, as it's much harder for bacteria get through a male's private area. The only change in his diet he's had since this has happened is that we gave him some carrots as treats. I know bacteria is normally the cause for UTI's, but I read that some foods can also cause it as well. I guess I am just rambling now, but it just seems like every month there is something that happens, granted nothing serious yet, thank God. First Colitis, then diarrhea, then a parasite, then an ear infection, now a possible UTI. Very frustrating because everything else is going so well with his training. He's even learned to pick up things now (most proud of him picking up keys) and bringing them to me. Credit to Jo Lauren's clicker retrieve course for that. Highly recommend it. Anyway, just wondering if someone who has dealt with this? There doesn't seems much I can do other than wait till the antibiotics hopefully kick in and resolve this issue and pray that it's nothing worse. It wouldn't be a big deal if he didn't have to wear the cone. That seems to be the main issue for him.
And as I just posted this just a little while ago, the vet called and confirmed it was a UTI. He said the antibiotics should clear it up.
