Hunter is 11 weeks old now. He has a kong and a few other rubber chew toys but he's not that interested in them. Obviously he likes the kong when it is stuffed, but if the food is too difficult to get out he gives up. He seems to like chewing harder things, he has a nylabone hollow stick thing which seems to be his go to but I worry about his teeth, so I bought the softer nylabone puppy toys but he's not interested. I was going to get him some more hard nylabone stuff but they say not for puppies without adult teeth. I've looked at the petstages sticks but on Amazon a lot of the reviews say they're dangerous. I've heard antlers can chip teeth... I'm so confused about what's the best for him! Thank you.
Hi Andrea, Our puppies have always liked Kongs and those traditional knotted rope toys best. You can find lots of ideas for puppy chews here. And there is some information about whether antlers are safe for dogs here.
I understand. I give Nylabones but not the rubber ones. My dogs bite chunks off. My dogs love the Petstages Dogwood Sticks. They've been chewing them for years with never any issues.
I have a couple of the kong toys one is a dinosaur and one is an octopus as they are made by kong they are stronger and squeak my 17 week old puppy loves them she can't distroy them as easy but the cost a bit more. there is quite selection at the pets shops even our vet sells a couple.
@Andrea0408 at 11wks, he will still have his puppy teeth and he will still have quite weak jaws. This means that even if he tries to chew hard, he won't be able to do much damage (to teeth or object!) - and, even if worst comes to the worst and he breaks a tooth, it will be 'only' a puppy tooth which is arguably a whole lot better than breaking off an adult tooth. As a result, with my pups, I am much more open to them chewing certain items which I wouldn't let them have with adult teeth. Such as deer antlers; PetStages chews... you can also try Yak chews as well. There is no such thing as a totally safe chewing item - in all ways - which is also going to effectively clean teeth and provide a good chewing experience. You just have to assess your individual dog and choose things which suit their own intensity of chewing, strength of jaw etc...
