My pup is like a crocodile. He chews carpets, wood gates even puppy pee pads. When I tell him NO he goes after my feet. Any suggestions on how to stop this?
This is completely normal at 10 weeks. Your pup doesn't know what no means, and probably sees the engagement as play- hence the toe biting. Restricting access to things you don't want chewed is best. A lot of people crate their puppy when they can't be supervised. We have quite a small downstairs area so we just removed most chewables from the area and supervised him closely. It helps to find out what your puppy likes to chew, and provide similar, acceptable chews. If your pup likes chewing wood there are some wood based chews that might be good for redirection. I know people here recommend the Petstages chew. We have had success with some of the Tasty Bone range, which I believe are made in the UK. Chewie especially likes anything nobbly. Good luck!
Hi I have a choc lab who chewed everything! We calmly but firmly told her"no bites" and put her over the gate in whichever room we were in away from us for a few minutes,she could still see us. We did this every time she chewed anything she shouldn't or chewed our hands or clothes, it took time but eventually she understood that this was not acceptable. We also provided her with frozen Kong's,wood chews,yak chews and antlers to chew on which kept her occupied some of the times although it's perfectly normal for pups to still chew on things they shouldn't. Tilly and Cooper did this when they were pups, Cooper especially. Both of them pretty much grew out of it, and just chew on their toys. Cooper did chew up a wood Christmas ornament this year.
Willow chews the skirting boards and door frame but only when we are not there like in the mornings if she wakes before us. She has lots of chews the dogwood, kong, kong toys, hide, balls. She has started mouthing our hands and even takes treats without taking our fingers off. She is 17 weeks now.
Oh goodness........this brought back memories. Bear now 6 mths, chewed/gnawed on/ate everything! He even destroyed a Kong toy!!! Nibbled the knobbly bits off. Coffee table still looks worried every time he passes by, slippers, remotes, HDMI leads, dining table chair legs, skirtings. Even me! The Blood Transfusion Service would have been proud at how much he was able to get out of me! Please stay strong, it doesn't last. No consolation while you are and your possessions are being systematically destroyed. Once those baby teeth come out it gets a whole lot easier. Kongs stuffed with biscuits, with even have a teddy that has a sweatshirt on and still hide bits of kibble in it. That kept him occupied for a while. I've read so many tips on here and one thing that keeps coming up is they get bored/need mental stimulation. Hiding kibble or treats in things helped massively alongside the usual training of sit, down, stay etc. Being calm and assertive when stopping them. Rewarding when they are not destroying. I also purchased some size appropriate Kong toys which are still going strong. Hang on in there...it will pass
