Cooper our first dog is 5.5 months now and coming along nicely. One thing I have noticed is that his pee quite green/yellow. Im sure he could do with drinking more. He has a bowl always topped up by his crate but spends a lot of time in my office where he has no water due to fact he makes quite a mess with it. I could get a non spill bowl, but anyone use any other type of dispenser I was thinking about some kind of bottle attached to his crate ? thanks Fraser
he is fed 3 times a day and I add water to his kibble, he will drink from the bowl but doesn't seem very often. I do feed him a couple of inches of cucumber too and Im sure he'd prefer to snozzle a good few lengths down than actually drink.
Hmm. Has he learnt that water drinking is something you don't approve of? What classical conditioning has taken place? I would let him drink in your office. Take a sponge and clean up the drops. I have a water bowl in our dining room. I place it on a newspaper. She makes a mess but most of the water goes on the newspaper. My dog also likes watermelon, which is mostly water.
A dog should always have water available if they are somewhere for any length of time. You could try a bowl with an absorbent mat around it - like an inside door mat - to mop up any spills.
yes the issue initially was upturning the water bowl but he seems to have stopped that recently. I do put my fingers in the bowl and he seems keen to lick the water from them, I will try a bowl again in the office.
Mine prefer the heavy stone ware bowls. We set them on a rug or towel. Yes dogs are messy drinkers. I spose you could put a large waterproof tray like the bottom from your kennel? and then the towel. We were given a stoneware bowl and I noticed they used it exclusively. Then it dawned on me I had a very nice stoneware bread pan sitting unused in my cupboard. Lol. And I found a couple at the second hand shop.
"green/yellow" pee? Sounds like an issue you should take up with your vet. Just leave the water out. He'll drink when he wants. You know the adage -- you can lead it to water but can't make it drink it.
At home we don't worry about the spillage, and normally have two large water bowls down. At our cabin where the floor is a snap together LVT I put a metal tray down under the water dish to minimize the wet floor.
