Got very well behaved 9month black lab crate trained from 8weeks took me 3weeks to house trained he goes off lead comes back he sit he lies down he barks when I ask him lol only trouble I've got when he sees a nother dog and I'm baffled I can't make him sit or nothing he's just so excitable any advice on this thanks
Hi @Dylan davies Perfectly normal. Dogs do not generalise very well, and when they go over threshold they will not listen to you. If I took you to an exciting concert you would probably not listen to me. What you have to do is gradually train for the distraction. Find the distance your dog follows your cue when there are other dogs nearby. It might be 100 metres between you and the other dogs. Do some repetitions. Reward each successful sit. Next day see if you can get to 90 metres. Try your cues. Reward each time your dog follows you cue. Gradually over many sessions get closer and closer to the distraction Don't rush it. You are attempting to get your dog used to other dogs. Don't expect to be able to get closer each session. You might go 100 to 90 to 80 and then one session have to move to 95. Your dog's emtional status fluctuates with the intensity of the distraction. Another Lab in the distance and she may more easily go over threshold. A Lab! Let's party. You have to read your dog's body language.
