We have a 12 week old black lab who can't seem to hold his bladder for more than an hour throughout a whole 24 hour period. Is this normal? We take his water bowl up at 7pm, but still continues to go for a wee. We've tried the pee pads, but he just pees next to them. We have had him for 6 weeks already with no sign of getting any better. Please help?
I agree it’s normal at this age..it never seems to stop. I think 14 weeks is when bladder maturity gets better...hang in there
You got your puppy at 6 weeks old?? Anyway, from my experience, when they are as young as your puppy is, you need to be taking your puppy out to his pee/poo spot every 30-45 minutes. If you do that, the chances will be higher and higher that he will go in that spot and build up a routine. Sometimes you have to wait out there with them for while before they go. Keep using a command like "go potty" every single time you go out with them. It's not fun, but it's also part of the young puppy stage. If you don't have to use the pee pads, I wouldn't. This just teaches them to go on the pads inside the house and you will eventually have to train them to go outside in the spot you want eventually. It just slows the potty training process.
My 4 month old lab at the time was still having accidents. We would take him out and 5 minutes later he would pee on floor. We took him to vet just to make sure there wasn't something medically going on. His urine test came back fine. Our vet said it is common w hormones and all that. He is now almost 6 months old and only has the occasional excited or not paying attention too busy playing dribbling.
