There is quite a lot of 'buzz' around now about the role of carbs (and insulin) in human cancer. This is one with reference to pets, from the Daily Vet Blog. Quite interesting. diets for pets with cancer
Re: Role of carbs for pets with cancer Thats very interesting Pippa . Ironically , I follow a very strict low carb regime as I am a diabetic and find that its carbs in any form that raise my BS and that in the absence of carbs , the body will use fats and protein for energy . Its very interesting to see how a low carb regime can also help pets with health problems , long may these types of research be funded in order to help pets in need .
Re: Role of carbs for pets with cancer It is interesting isn't it? Because for so long we all thought glucose was an essential fuel. I really like Mark Sisson's website if you haven't seen it already. He often has good reports on scientific studies and covers all angles quite objectively.
Re: Role of carbs for pets with cancer In the case of healthy dogs and cats, who would not naturally eat a lot of carbohydrates, it seems only logical that diets high in fat and protein would be beneficial. Perhaps it will also turn out that a high-fat, high-protein diet in dogs and cats can help prevent cancer, as well as being useful in the treatment of already existing cancer.
Re: Role of carbs for pets with cancer Indeed! One of the reasons I would love to see a proper long term study comparing raw fed dogs with kibble fed dogs. Perhaps I am being very cynical, but I suspect those providing the funds for veterinary trials might not be so keen...
Re: Role of carbs for pets with cancer Shame I can't get the link to work so can't read the article but I strongly suspect that pet cancers are diet related much as they are in humans. Even in the very conservative Cancer Research UK estimates 60% of human cancers could be prevented with lifestyle change so why would it be any different in our pets fed an entirely denatured diet?
