Id say it’s because it has prednisolone in it which is a corticosteroid. It helps by reducing inflammation. It also damps down your immune system, which can help in autoimmune illnesses like where your immune system mistakenly attacks its own tissues.

It has multiple uses and purposes. I’m not a vet or pharmacist but you’re not meant to be on these for long term though. If your dog is having another flare up. Might be good to revisit this drug though. If it works and gives him her relief.

Probably good to have a follow up bloods as it can affect kidney liver function.

    Good luck.

Rather than using a steroid to suppress immune responses, why not work to establish what the dog is allergic to and then avoid that?

Far healthier! I'd be thinking about diet, to start with... and trying an elimination diet. It's best to do this alongside vet advice and supervision but you can also do it by yourself.

My girl Willow who is 23 months old is exactly the same. As she had this before I had her she’s not covered on insurance. She’s had tests and confirmed an extreme form of dermatitis, and as yours she shed almost all of her hair and was covered in cuts where she had been biting. After a period on anti biotics it cleared up. She is also prescribed Apaquel for the itching which she takes twice a day, but the vet wants to reduce this to once a day. She is still scratching and biting and recently started to lose some hair again. I have changed her food to a hypoallergenic type which doesn’t seem to help, so any ideas or things you have tried would be most welcome. Thank you

Sort of related, Jax gets conjunctivitus quite often and after the usual treatment, it kept coming back, so he has recently had blood tests to test for allergies. They now know what it is and are in the process of building a vax for him. That could be an option to sort it out long-term.

6 years ago my dog had such bad allergies that the vet wanted to put her to put her to sleep. I tried lots of different products and eventually gave her Healthy hounds Scottish salmon oil. I noticed a difference within a month and eventually she was back to a normal healthy dog and has never relapsed. Apparently it corrects the fault in their immune system from the inside out. Hope this helps, I know it is heartbreaking to see them suffering.
