Hi - we are new puppy owners and are feeling a bit overwhelmed and confused about what we should be doing regarding the issues below!

We got our 10 week old black lab puppy (Luna) on Sunday and are very aware that we need to start socialising her pretty quickly so as to fit everything in before the socialisation window shuts. Both times we have taken her outside (in our arms) she has shaken like a leaf and peed on us. Is this normal?! How can we help her feel less nervous and stop the peeing? We try to ensure she has just been for a wee before we take her out anywhere so it isn't like she hasn't has a pee in a while!

The other issue we are having is that when we tried her in the car crate she hated it and cried the entire 3 minute journey, despite us fussing over her initially and letting her get used to it and having some treats within it before setting off. Did we push her too fast? Can anyone suggest anything else?

We are trying to follow the advice for toileting eg. taking her out when she wakes / after she eats / after she plays etc and staying out for 5 mins then coming in and cuddling / trying to crate her then going out again but it doesn't seem to be working that well. Sometimes she goes really quickly when she's outside, other times we seem to wander around forever and repeat the whole process and nothing! Any suggestions?

Also...is it normal for your puppy to want to poo overnight? She has wanted to every night so far between 3.30am - 6.30am.

Any help on these issues would be much appreciated!!
    Thank you :)

When I feel overwhelmed with our pup I try and think what it’s like for her too being a baby in a new place with new people. We got our Gwenni at 9 weeks and she has stayed in a crate in our room. Yes she needed reassurance. Yes she cried and needed to go to the toilet 3/4 times a night. She had a tiny bladder and no bladder or bowel control. That stopped at around 13 weeks, but still needs and early wake up to go toilet at 19 weeks. Hope that helps a little

Hi and welcome, we had the same issues in the car with our pup. She cried and was very distressed. We then tried me sitting in the back and bringing her out of her crate in the boot and sitting with me with her safety harness on on the rear seat.

Gradually over the next couple of weeks she calmed down and the crying stopped. We then tried her in the boot again but I still had to sit in the rear seat to reassure her.

Finally we progressed to me sitting in my usual place in the front with my husband.

It took a while but she obviously needed the comfort of being close to me. Incidentally, we also crate trained her indoors and we put her crate in our bedroom, when she cried we just held our hand down for her to sniff and she went off to sleep, we never had any problems with her sleeping all night, I think because we had her in the room with us.

    Good luck
