    Hi there,

We have a 10year old lab that sleeps in the laundry and we are about to get a pup. Eventually I would like them bot to sleep in the laundry, but the pup in a crate as I don't want her jumping all over my old who can be silly and the injury herself!

What I am not sure of, is do I put the pup in a crate near me for a few weeks so I can let her out for a wee etc without disturbing my old lab in the middle of the night. Or do I start of as I mean to go on with the pup in a crate in the laundry from night 1. My issue is with this is that if I get up to let the pup out for a wee old lab will not be happy at all. The crate we have is big enough that if pup was desperate it could wee in the crate but do I live with this and have them together from day 1 or work up to this slowly as they get used to each other? Thanks heaps in advance
    Maria

My last pup was crated next to where my old 10 year old dog slept, in the same room. They stayed like that even when I decrated her. Why won’t your old lab be happy being disturbed, my old dog just either joined us on our night time trips outside or ignored us ! The old dog took some time to adjust to the pup, but they were very close eventually.

I highly recommend you have a small crate by your bed at night for at least a week with your new puppy. Carry the puppy outside during the night to toilet, without letting the pup attempt to play with the older dog. During the day, have a second crate in the laundry and spend time training the pup to enjoy going in there for treats and out again, and having tasty Kongs in there - so that hopefully after the first week you can transition to that.

Lastly, dogs like to be in the heart of the family and home and not relegated to peripheral rooms - so laundry rooms are not a great choice as many dogs will feel banished there. Some may be ok, but really don't expect your new pup to accept it just because your existing dog has.

Hi, I just took my pup out when she needed and as Edp says my older dog just ignored us or came out with us. I had boarding dogs staying as well with the pup, they mostly ignored us or came out for a quick wee too and we all went back to bed!!
