We pick our puppy up tomorrow morning. It's a 10 hour trip, so 5 hours back home with the pup. Is it best to keep him in the crate all the time, or on someone's lap/front footwell? If he's wanting out for a pee is it ok to stop at the side of the road even though he hasn't had his first jags yet? When we get home, is it ok for him to be in our garden? (Getting first Jag on Saturday morning). We already have a dog (fully vaccinated etc) but can we have friends come round with their dog (they're all upto date vaccinated too)? Wanting to start socialising skills straight away but obviously don't want him to come to any harm.
Hi @FoxRedLab I would keep him the crate. If you need to stop suddenly you will never hang on to him. See if you can bring a small blanket with the scent of his litter and place in the crate. Or take a towel with you and let it pick up the scent before putting in the crate. Have him on a harness and lead when you stop for urination break. If parvo is a real risk in the area put down a newspaper. Spread it out and he can toilet on that. Some dogs don't like urinating on paper. So take some towels with you. Cover the ground with them. Carry a plastic bag with you to seal the soiled material. I would be reluctant to bring lots of dogs to your place. He should not be overwhelmed. Carry him to see all the sights. Watch his body language. He needs to be having a good time. If not, then create distance to the object until he calms. You'll need water and a small bowl. Carry extra bedding in case he is car sick. Hello, I sat in the back with our girl but I guess if you have a crate use that. She did vomit and so was glad to have waterproof seat cover and kitchen roll etc at the ready. Take puppy pads perhaps for the wee stop? All the best !
