Does anyone else have a pup who likes to eat rocks? Every time we go for walks or are at a park or camping, he wants to eat rocks. I just wasn’t sure if this was typical behavior for labs or not. We are trying everything we can come up to prevent him from eating them but sometimes it’s very challenging.

Hi my 16 month old lab did this as a tiny puppy and unfortunately still will if she gets the chance!

In the end we put up temporary plastic fencing around all the beds in our garden where there were little stones or rocks.

She only does it in the garden as she's far too interested when out , in all the other dogs, humans etc.

I was hoping to have removed the fencing by now but she's still not ready.

    Good luck

My Harry is 17 weeks and I have to watch him constantly when in the garden as we have loose stone paths and slate around flower beds! He is always chewing on stones. Luckily, he spits them out and doesn't do this on walks as he's too busy with his surroundings. Maybe it's a boredom thing?

My 16 week old likes to chew on rocks and so far she just spits them out. We have tried to remove all the rocks in our yard but she always finds one.

I thought he was always spitting them out, but the last time we went camping it was clear that he had ingested them if you know what I mean. I’m just hoping that some day he will lose his obsession for chewing on and eating rocks. Thanks for your feedback.

Important that you stop the rock (and stick) eating behavior as it can result in very expensive surgery - $3K-$4K - if there is a rupture.

Ingesting rocks can cause blockages. The majority of puppies will grow out of trying to eat everything, including rocks. But you need to ensure they are kept away from things they may eat in this way for their own safety.

Wow! My puppy who is 17 weeks old also thinks its a good idea to chew rocks. Thought it was weird and chalked it up to teething. So glad I found this group this morning as we are new paw-rents and I'm sure I'll be looking for advice quite often.
