Hello all. We are just 5 days away from bringing our first puppy home! I've never had an indoor dog and neither have our children, but my husband grew up with them. I am taking the whole first week off from work to give our furry addition my full attention. After that we will all tag team so someone is always with her.

Needless to say, I am so nervous!! I have always said that our home is OUR home and a pet is a guest that must follow our established house rules. I've seen far too many homes destroyed by pets allowed to wreak havock. I do NOT want that. But I also want to be a good pet parent and give our pup all that she needs including a warm, loving, safe environment.

I've been reading and rereading everything possible on this excellent site. Here's crossing my fingers!

Hi @ptsjjfamily don't be nervous, you'll be fine. Don't put such high expectations on her though - she will, in all likelihood, struggle to automatically fit in to your existing routines - she simply won't understand them. Be clear on what you want from her, but expect her to take time to learn what it is that you mean. Work on your relationship with her and keeping her relaxed and calm, and everything else should come naturally.

I only say all this because that's exactly what I DIDN'T do and I made the whole process a lot more stressful than it needed to be. I had unrealistic expectation.
